6 reasons why we came to the Frankfurt Book Fair
Because understanding begins with meeting each other.
We want to create a space where Czechs and Germans can come together, share their stories and discover different perspectives. That’s why we have our own stand in Frankfurt, inviting visitors to explore the unfamiliar together – our very own “Bohemian villages”.
Because books open our eyes.
Since 1998, we have supported nearly 1,300 books. In Frankfurt, we are showcasing Czech and German publishers, their books and stories that help us get to know our neighbouring country better.
Because we need to talk about our shared stories.
Together with Radka Denemarková, Daniel Brössler, Jaroslav Rudiš and other guests, we are exploring topics that go far beyond literature – from our shared history to the uncertainties of today’s world.
Because sometimes a single word is enough.
What do pohoda, nadhled or Vorfreude mean? Through words that are difficult to translate, illustrations by Jaromír 99 and our poetry jukebox, we invite visitors to discover our neighbouring country in a playful way.
Because Czech culture has so much to offer in Germany.
We support its presentation both at the book fair and throughout Frankfurt – from contemporary architecture to literature, poetry and visual arts. We want to show you Czechia from perspectives you may not have discovered yet.
Because we want to inspire more joint projects.
We support cooperation between schools, associations, cultural institutions and individuals. In Frankfurt, we invite visitors to discussions and to have a coffee with us. Your next Czech-German project might start over a cup of coffee.
With our support beyond the book fair
30 seconds to understanding
Why “Böhmische Dörfer verstehen”?
The German expression “böhmische Dörfer” (literally “Bohemian villages”) refers to something unfamiliar or difficult to understand. For us, it symbolises everything we have yet to discover about our neighbours – and is also an invitation to get to know each other better. Because mutual understanding begins not only with knowledge, but above all with meeting each other. That is why we are creating a space in Frankfurt where people, stories and different perspectives from Czechia and Germany come together.
Fewer “böhmische Dörfer”. More shared future.

Almost one per week
On average, the Future Fund has supported almost one publication project every week.
25 years of reading
If you read one supported book a week, it would take you a quarter of a century to finish them all.
260 metres of books
The books we have supported would form a tower far taller than Frankfurt’s Main Tower.

How has Czech-German literature evolved?

“We have shifted our focus from studying history to exploring stories – and asking what our understanding of the past means for us today and for the future.”
Tomáš Jelínek and Susanne Sehlbach, Executive Directors of the Czech-German Future Fund
We are part of Czechia 2026
Czechia is the Guest of Honour at the 2026 Frankfurt Book Fair – the biggest opportunity for Czech literature to gain visibility in Germany in years. The Czech-German Future Fund is a partner of Czechia 2026. Through our “The Road to Us” funding programme, we have supported the publication of numerous books that will be presented in Frankfurt. We are also hosting four panel discussions at the fair. At our stand, we are providing a space for more than 20 Czech and German publishers to showcase their work, exchange ideas and build connections.
